Dublin is a city full of wonderful places to have a picnic on a sunny day. From parks to beaches, Dublin has it all. At The Alex we love a good picnic, so we picked out the best spots to put your blanket on and relax for the whole afternoon.
Merrion Square is our personal favourite picnic spot because it’s around the corner of The Alex. The park is located in the heart of Georgian Dublin and is surrounded by hisotric Georgian houses. On Thursdays, there is an international food market happening during lunch time, they have all different kinds of food and the grass is alays full of people enjoying their lunch. When you finished eating, cross the street to the National Gallery. Entry is free and it’s definitely worth visiting.
Walk a few minutes further and you’ll end up at the beautiful Iveagh Gardens. There is lots of space and if you don’t like sitting in the grass there are plenty of benches. The green oasis in the middle of the city centre is the perfect spot to escape the busy streets. Also, the background sound of the waterfall will definitely help you relax on your picnic afternoon.
Powerscourt Estate and Waterfall
The Powerscourt Estate might not be located in Dublin, but it’s definitely worth the drive. It will take you less than an hour by car, but there are also public transport options. You can have a picnic in the beautiful gardens of the estate, but we would also recommend going to the waterfall. It’s the highest waterfall in Ireland and the perfect example of Ireland’s natural beauty.
Killiney Hill is located 30 minutes by car from Dublin and is also reachable by the DART. It is a popular destination for walkers and hikers because of the spectacular views over the surrounding areas: Dublin to the northwest, the sea and the mountains of Wales to the east and southeast, and Bray Head and the Wicklow Mountains to the south. This is the perfect picnic spot to admire Ireland’s beauty.
Early morning on Killiney Hill…. if there's a more beautiful place in Dublin I haven't seen it yet ?. . . . . #morning #sunday #killiney #killineyhill #killineybeach #dalkey #dublinigers #igersdublin #discoverdublin #lovedublin #lovindublin #dublin #ireland #insta_ireland #loves_ireland #icu_ireland #ireland_gram #discoverireland #outdoors #nature #sugarloaf #sea #seaside #getoutside #summer #sunshine #blueskies
For people that don’t just want to sit on a blanket all afternoon, go to the Botanic Gardens. The Botanic Gardens are a stunning green space filled with trees, flowers, fountains, bridges, hedges and glasshouses. Best of it all, admission is free.
You’re now probably already packing your bag for a picnic, but as we all know the Irish weather can be against us. So, if you’re looking for a dry spot to enjoy some food, make sure to pay a visit to our restaurant. To have a look at our menu, visit our website here.
